Praying for the Democratic Republic of Congo

This November, please join us in a global movement of prayer for peaceful elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DRC is a nation at the heart of Africa that has suffered many years of hardship and war, and is known as one of the worst places in the world for sexual gender-based violence. DRC's second-ever democratic elections are scheduled for November 28th. The election period is an extremely fragile time for the country. Many fear that rebel leaders and others will use the elections to stir up renewed violence. There have already been several incidents of violence in the capital and other regions.

Yet we know that with God all things are possible. DRC is over 80% Christian with many thriving churches and Christian ministries operating in a context of extreme poverty. The churches in DRC are asking for other churches around the world to stand in solidarity and faith with them as they pray for peace. Please join us in praying for a peaceful election period so that this country can continue to move forward in greater peace and stability.

Please pray for:

1) Pray for peaceful campaigns in the period leading up to the election day. Pray against any spirit of violence... ... or division, and especially against any renewed violence from rebel groups or political parties.

2) Pray that the right candidates emerge and that God would move the hearts of the chosen leaders to pursue a path of peace and integrity that would benefit all people in DRC

3) Pray that the overall outcome of the election would lead to greater peace, stability, and prosperity in DRC

4) Pray for those who are most vulnerable during this period - that God would protect the innocent

5) Pray that the church in DRC would take its place as a voice of peace and justice, empowered by the Holy Spirit

Please join us in prayer wherever you are. Our prayers will be supporting the wonderful people of DRC and the many churches there that are praying for peace.

We know that our God is a God of the impossible, and that things change when we pray. We know He loves this great nation and longs to see it truly prosper.

If you would like to find out more about how you can help or pray, please consider visiting the following sites:

Last night was a wonderful rejuvenating gathering! It was wonderful to connect with friends old and new from Ontario and beyond! The evening started with Aaron from The Well leading us into the Lord's Presence, and then our very own Chris Jones shared with us about how when we make our intimate communion with God a priority, "Fruit Happens." We will post an exerpt from his talk soon!

This morning we are meeting in focus groups around the city to discuss three questions:
1. Is prayer an escape from actually taking responsibility in this world and in our cities? Why or why not?
2. Should we focus more on praying with "the saints" (the church), or praying with those outside the church. Why? And how does this affect the way that we pray?
3. What are teh obstacles to prayer in your own life, in your church, and as a city/national prayer movement? What is the purpose of prayer in your life, in your church, in the city/national movement?

This afternoon we will be having a talkbacks session to share our responses. It's likely to be lively!

Tonight we are hearing from Richard Long from Together Canada as he shares about Rejuvenating Prayer in our Cities. ... ...
Prayer and Mission- A Place of Grace, Vancouver BC

BY Aaron White

In Vancouver there is one day each month on which the social assistance cheques are distributed. For many people this does not cause any problem, as they need the money for rent and necessities, and it comes at an opportune moment on a Wednesday near the end of the month.

But for the Downtown Eastside, “Welfare Wednesday”, as it has come to be known, is a very difficult day. Long line-ups early in the morning at the Welfare offices announce, in case any one forgot, that the day has arrived. Line-ups of drug dealers near the local cheque cashing facilities proclaim the same message. It is a day for many when drug debts are paid and habits are reinforced.

People on social assistance in British Columbia do not receive enough help to live in a healthy way during the month. Rents in the slum hotels are higher than the shelter portion given, so food money has to be dipped into, meaning most people need to make use of soup lines or other services for free food. People also have a very hard time budgeting well what little money they have, many not having been given any good modeling of this... ... in their lives.

And then there is crack and heroin and meth. We have walked alongside many people who have been doing incredibly well, fighting off the demons of addiction and old habits all month, imagining the possibilities of a life spent without the debilitating attachment to destructive substances. But then Welfare Wednesday hits, and every single neighbour they have in their hotel is lit up and offering them hits. How could any of us stay away from our greatest temptations in such an environment? Friends will disappear for a week or so, and then come back, ashamed, broke, not sure if they have it in them to start all over again from the beginning. This is the monthly rhythm in our neighbourhood.

We have known for a long time that this isn’t good enough. It’s no way to live, it offers no hope for the future, it contributes powerfully to the cycle of dependency and despair, causes others in our society to look upon our friends as useless, “sub-human” wastes of tax dollars, and exhausts those who are trying to offer compassion and hope.

So we started imagining. Along with some friends we asked the question: “How can we walk – and help others to walk – in the opposite spirit of Welfare Wednesday?” It is a time of despair. So what if we did something joyful? It is a time of wasted resources. So what if we found a way to maximise funds? It is a time of loneliness. So what if we offered family? It is a time of dependency. So what if we recognised dignity? It is a time, we discerned, of territorial, systemic, demonic oppression. So what if we prayed?

Seven or eight different prayerful and incarnational communities got together and realised we had all been thinking along these same lines for years, some of us inspired by a lady named “Grace” who had been doing something like this on her own for some time until circumstances had made it impossible for her to continue. So we committed to stopping everything each month on that one day, and attempting, by God’s grace, to change the culture, to create a “Place of Grace”.

We begin in prayer, uniting for a full 24 hours of intercession in two or three locations, praying for freedom and deliverance for ourselves, our community, our friends. We then walk with our friends to collect their cheques, and offer to drive them outside the neighbourhood to cash the cheques and to buy groceries in places that didn’t mark up all the prices. We then put on a full day block party with music, barbequed burgers (money raised going to help free enslaved children in Southeast Asia), and clean, safe, sacred space. Fight the demons with prayer, groceries, and parties.

We’ve tried it twice so far, with good results. Word is getting out. People are excited. Grace is bouncing up and down with new light in her eyes. We are thrilled to be partnering in the gospel and in prayer and in service with our fellow believers. And our friends are experiencing hope. It is a change, however subtle, however small yet, in the rhythm of the month, in the rhythm of the neighbourhood.

Making Space - the Power of Simple Hospitality

We’ve just finished a week of 24/7 prayer in the back of a UHaul truck. Parked in the downtown core, right behind Living Rock, a ministry to at risk youth, the Prayer Truck facilitated sacred space in and around it. Over the course of the week, faithful prayer warriors came and went, filling up the truck with their prayers, paintings, songs, collages, and other creative prayer expressions.

For six (or more!) hours a day, my job is the “Doorkeeper”. I watch over the truck, filling any empty prayer slots and practicing hospitality with the participants and the passers by. My setup is simple. I have two lawn chairs, a bin of bottled water, and a patio umbrella (which got mangled in a massive storm – we were evacuated at one point to the basement of the adjoining ministry as tornadoes touched down in some of the surrounding areas). Near the end of the week we added the sign “do you need prayer?” so people walking by could stop and share prayer requests. It was astounding how many of them did.

Our hospitality setup

8 am – Sunday. Sam is homeless... ... – sort of. He’s lost his key to his room in the rooming house and no one will let him in. Clouds gather and Sam gestures to the sky. “Don’t worry, I have power over the weather!” We stay mostly dry. “It would have been much worse,” he consoles me.

4 pm – Monday. I’m in the truck. Suddenly four half dressed and fully intoxicated young men burst in. “I’m f-ing gonna do it! I’m gonna pray!” one of them exclaims. I scootch over a little so I’m sitting on my backpack, which has my wallet and cameras in it. “Ok gentlemen, you’re in the prayer truck. What are we going to pray about?” They write their prayers on the walls – ok, so they write their gang tags, and the names of their girlfriends, but it’s a start. The tell me how they’re off drugs and trying to clean up their lives, and in the end we all pray together for a couple of them who want to go into treatment.

8 am – Wednesday. One of the guys from Monday swaggers up and sits in the free chair. Sober this time. We watch the city wake up. He shows me his scars (bullets, knives, and a screwdriver!), shares about how he’s trying to build a new life. “This song is f-ing amazing – you’ve got to hear it!” We sit side by side, sharing earbuds on his ipod.

6:30 am – Another morning, another sunrise, another young man. Waiting for the Rock’s breakfast program to start. He is enthusiastically describing to me how to make a baked Alaska, and wants to be a pastry chef. We talk about the importance of following your passion.

I’ve been here every day for a week now. Drinks for the thirsty and company for the lonely. All it took was space. An extra lawn chair. Free time in my schedule. They know I’m sitting quietly praying and waiting, and so they come.

I’m hopelessly addicted, overwhelmed by the pleasure of heaven in what we are doing. We’ve obtained permission to go another week. We’re taking the weekend off to catch our breath but Monday, 6 am, I’ll be out there again. Making space. Asking God to fill it.
